Seine Bight

Seine Bight is a village on the Placencia Peninsula located in the Stann Creek District of Belize. It is located 2 and a half miles south of Maya Beach Village and North of the village of Placencia. This small village has roughly 1,000 inhabitants, mostly Garifuna people who subsist on fishing, hunting, and homegrown vegetables. The early settlers named their village for their favored fishing tackle, Seine fishing and a bight, a bend or curve in a coastline.

Cahal Pech

The main attraction in the town. Cahal Pech is a smallish set of Mayan ruins that were abandoned around 800-900 AD. There is an indoor museum displaying artifacts, a site plan, and information on the ruins in a regional context. There are, allegedly, guided tours, but these are unneeded, as the site is easy to traverse. The entire site should take 1-2 hours at most for a thorough exploration. Once at the ruins, the site is fairly flat, but Cahal Pech is at the top of the hill overlooking San Ignacio. The walk uphill to it from the main town is quite exhausting and is difficult even from the San Ignacio Resort Hotel on the hill. If you have any disability, or are in poor physical condition, you will want to drive.

Hopkins (Belize)

Belize

The town seemed to be full of stoners. When I arrived at my hotel the owner was nowhere to be seen. As I was about to give up a boat appeared, and a lady in her 50s got out, high as a kite, and put a lei of flowers around my neck.

She asked me if I wanted dinner, and I said okay. A man at the table took LSD and then I was offered some cake. I politely declined, not sure what was in it. I don't remember much about Hopkins over then this interesting hostel encounter.

Hopkins (Belize)

Hopkins is a small village in Stann Creek in Belize with a long beach and access to the Belize Barrier Reef for snorkeling and diving, garifuna drumming, and nearby nature parks.

Hopkins is a Garifuna village on the coast of the Stann Creek District in Belize. Hopkins is considered by some Belizeans to be the cultural center of the Garifuna population in Belize. The town hosts its own national holiday, Hopkins Day, and welcomes people for their celebration on Garifuna Independence Day as well, they do this with drum ceremonies that can last till early hours in the morning.

The village is separated into two parts; the Northside (Baila) and the Southside (False Sittee). Hopkins is surrounded by the Maya Mountains and the Cockscomb Range inland, and the Caribbean Sea on its shore. It is also very close to the Sittee River. The village was created in 1942 to replace the village of Newtown, which was devastated by a hurricane further up the coast.
